Learn From Nigeria’s Past to Build a Stronger Future, Otti says

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has called on Nigerians to embrace the lessons of history as a foundation for national healing, unity and sustainable development, insisting that the country’s past should serve as a guide rather than a source of division.

Speaking at the 60th memorial anniversary of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi on Wednesday, Governor Otti said many of the decisions taken during the country’s early years were shaped by the difficult realities of the time and the inexperience of those who occupied positions of leadership.

He stressed that an honest understanding of Nigeria’s history, particularly the events that culminated in the Civil War, is crucial to preventing the repetition of past mistakes and promoting lasting peace across the country.

Reflecting on his personal study of Nigeria’s history, the governor revealed that he read late novelist Chinua Achebe’s ‘There Was a Country’ during a flight from London to Chicago, describing the book as one of the most compelling accounts of the nation’s journey and the Biafran experience.

Governor Otti also commended the works of other historians and scholars, including Professor Okey Anueyiagu, for enriching public understanding of the Nigerian Civil War from different viewpoints.

He maintained that although historical interpretations may differ, Nigerians must remain committed to drawing wisdom from the past, strengthening reconciliation, deepening national cohesion and laying a solid foundation for future generations.
