A Priest Can Be Intimate With a Woman And Still Remain Holy? – By Rev. Fr. Stanley Obi
The presence of intimacy between a priest and the opposite sex does not automatically destroy his priesthood or make him unfaithful to his vow of celibacy—because priests are human beings, not angels without emotions.
The real danger is not necessarily the relationship itself, but the failure to establish boundaries, exercise self-control, and recognize when emotional closeness is becoming spiritually dangerous.
Some argue that completely avoiding women is the only way for a priest to remain holy, but could running away from every meaningful relationship actually reveal fear or emotional immaturity rather than genuine holiness?
Even Jesus had close relationships with women, yet He taught the importance of proper boundaries and detachment: “Do not hold me”—a powerful reminder that love does not always mean possession.
Perhaps the greatest test of priestly celibacy is not whether a priest can avoid every woman, but whether he can relate to women with genuine charity, wisdom, discipline, and self-control without crossing the boundaries of his vocation.
So, what do you think: Should priests completely avoid intimate relationships with women, or can a mature priest maintain healthy relationships with the opposite sex without compromising his celibacy?
