IHRC-RFT Calls For Investigation Into Factors Fueling Corruption In Security Agencies

The International Human Rights Commission – Relief Fund Trust (IHRC-RFT), Nigeria Chapter, has called for a comprehensive investigation into factors that may be fuelling corruption within some security agencies.

One major concern is the poor welfare and inadequate operational support of security personnel. In some cases, officers are provided with vehicles but are expected to provide fuel, repairs and servicing themselves, while also bearing other operational expenses. This raises a serious question: where are officers expected to obtain the money to perform duties that should be funded by government?

Even more disturbing are allegations of “returns” allegedly demanded from some state-level security commanders by senior officials. Information received by IHRC-RFT alleges monthly payments ranging from ₦5 million to ₦10 million, with claims that some states may be paying as much as ₦30 million.

IHRC-RFT does not present these allegations as established facts. We therefore call on the relevant authorities to urgently conduct an independent and thorough investigation to establish the truth, trace the funds and hold anyone found responsible accountable under the law.

Government must also ensure that security personnel receive adequate salaries, welfare, uniforms, fuel, vehicles and operational equipment. A security system cannot effectively protect citizens when those entrusted with the responsibility are placed under financial pressure to fund official duties themselves.

As the saying attributed to one of the former President of Nigeria goes: “If we do not fight corruption, corruption will fight us.”
