Comrade Paul Njoku, a human rights activist, author and public affairs analyst has replied the governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Monday Okpebholo, following the governor’s remark that fuel is sold at 3,000 naira per litre in the United Kingdom (UK) and that Nigerians should be grateful a litre of fuel is sold at 1, 450 naira to 1, 500 naira per litre under the President Tinubu-led administration upon the removal of fuel subsidy.

Reacting, Comrade Njoku stated that, “comparing the UK fuel price and that of the Nigeria situation by the governor of Edo State is laughable.

“I am deeply sure that Edo State governor is not an illiterate that shouldn’t learn to think before speaking to his audience. It is comprehensively unreasonable and irresponsible that the governor doesn’t know that 52% of the cost of fuel in the UK is government taxes!

“As at April 2026, the following were the minimum wages in the UK;
– Aged 21 and over (National Living Wage): £12.71 per hour
– Aged 18 to 20: £10.85 per hour
– Aged 16 to 17: £8.00 per hour,
– Apprentice rate: £8.00 per hour (for under 19s, or those in their first year).

“At an average of 8 hours of work per day, someone above 21 years, earns £101.68 per day and for 22 days in a month, £2,236.96 (ie. N3,943,582 @FX of N1,762.92 per Naira).

“The minimum wage of a UK worker is 56 times more than the Nigerian minimum wage of N70,000.

“And the Governor is speaking grammar!

“52% of the cost of fuel in the UK is government taxes!

“As at April 2026, the following were the minimum wages in the UK;
