BREAKING: ASUU Shuts down Abia State University, Declares Indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Abia State University, ABSU Chapter, Uturu, has declared a total and indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement between the union and the Federal Government.

The union announced the strike on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, through a press release made available to newsmen in Umuahia

The branch Chairman, Dr Chidi S. Mba, and Secretary, Dr. Victor U Obisike said the decision followed the failure of the Governor Alex Otti led government and the university management to implement the agreement, which was signed by ASUU and the Federal Government on December 23, 2025, and was scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026.

According to the union, despite several engagements with the Abia state government and the university administration, presentation of the agreement, and the issuance of a 21-day ultimatum, there had been no meaningful response, a member of the Union told newsmen.

The statement reads:-

NOTICE TO ALL ASUU–ABSU MEMBERS

Dear Comrades,

The ASUU–ABSU Branch hereby informs all members that the Branch has commenced a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action with effect from today, Tuesday, 11th August 2026.

Accordingly, all members are directed to withdraw their services completely and comply fully with the directives of the Union. Members are enjoined to remain united, resolute and committed as we collectively pursue the resolution of the outstanding welfare and institutional demands of the Union.

Remember no attendance to any form of statutory meetings of any sort including senate meetings, faculty boards etc.

Further directives and updates will be communicated to members as developments unfold.
