ADC Accuses Tinubu of Threatening Democracy, Alleges Plot to Weaken Opposition in Osun

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu of pursuing a win-at-all-costs political agenda, warning that such an approach poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy and national stability.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC alleged that the Federal Government was deploying state institutions to weaken opposition parties ahead of the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.

The party specifically condemned the freezing of statutory allocations to local government councils in Osun State, describing the action as “political terrorism” aimed at undermining the administration of the state. It warned that the withholding of the funds could disrupt the payment of workers’ salaries, primary healthcare services, education, and other essential public services.

According to the ADC, the move reflects what it described as President Tinubu’s tendency to treat political contests as warfare rather than democratic competition.

The statement read in part: “No democracy worthy of the name deliberately sacrifices the welfare of innocent citizens in pursuit of partisan political ends. The salaries of workers, the operation of primary healthcare centres, the education of children, rural infrastructure and other essential public services have all been turned into bargaining chips in President Tinubu’s political contest.”

The opposition party further alleged that the freezing of local government funds was part of a broader effort to destabilise Osun State ahead of the election. It claimed that unelected loyalists of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were still occupying local government councils, while opposition members had allegedly been subjected to intimidation and arrests.

The ADC also accused hoodlums allegedly linked to the APC of harassing political opponents, claiming that security agencies had failed to take appropriate action against those responsible.

“Political opponents are not enemy combatants. Opposition-controlled states are not occupied territories. Public institutions do not belong to whichever party temporarily controls the federal government,” the statement added.

The party called on the Federal Government to immediately restore the statutory allocations to Osun State’s local governments and end what it described as the intimidation of the state.

It maintained that the people of Osun State should be allowed to freely determine their political future without interference.

“What the people of Osun deserve is the democratic right to freely choose who governs them. But right now, they have been placed under a siege. This has to stop,” the statement concluded.
